Why do we do Church History? 1. It gives us an understanding of our heritage of the church. 2. It gives us an understanding of who we are as Christians both in the Global Christian family and within a particular branch of the Christian Community.

3. It gives us an understanding of how historical Christian actions, debates, etc., shaped and made us what we are today as Christians (e.g., how things got to be the way they are, why different Churches think, believe, and act the way they do). 4. It helps us understand how previous exegesis, systematic theology, and practical theology have made an impact on the church. 5. It can give us insight into how to deal with contemporary problems and can serve as a guide toward the future. 6. It can help us appreciate the sacrifices and victories of the past which can serve as edification and inspiration for the present. 7. It can give us insight into theology and its development, as well as the Bible, as historical context is learned and understood.
