A Very Diverse Twitter Mosaic
What do all of the following people have in common? Theology? Hardly! We are talking about a group of people that includes both Mark Driscoll AND Tony Jones! Politics? Nope! This is a group that claims Obama campaigner Nate Bomberger AND political/social conservative Nick Gray! Is it race, or gender? Obviously not! So what do the following people have in common? It’s simple: They all – and many others like them – are following me on Twitter! You can follow me too! So, what are you waiting for? Go on, Follow Me!, and be sure to click-check a few of the people in the mosaic! Read more…

Tribe Gets Social Networking Features

I’m running a few experiments with social networking here at Tribe. Specifically, I’m trying to incorporate a social networking aspect to the site that goes beyond simple commenting and linking. The loftier goal is to learn more about the readers of this blog and introduce you (readers) to one another (other readers) in an intentional and edifying manner. Read more…

I Think God Spoke To Me Through Facebook … And Other Distractions!

Friend and fellow Facebook-er Scott Kennedy tagged me for one of those annoying yet somehow clever Facebook memes. You know what I’m talking about, right? Facebook memes. They are all the rage right now, for some odd and stupefying reason. Three quick examples of popular Facebook memes that would make social networking’s greatest hits list would include: 1.) The endless “25 Random Things” meme variants; 2.) The “Google Yourself” (Google your name and then place “(your first name) needs” in front of the first ten results); 3.) The Bucket List Facebook Meme (same plot as the movie that goes by the same name). You get the idea, right? Facebook memes like these go on and on living in a seemingly endless stream of constantly changing variation. Read more…

An Online Bible and Opportunity for Global Collaboration

YouVersion bills itself as a revolutionary online community! And it just may be! Its revolutionary potential finds a catalyst in the fact that it is a community built totally around the Bible and conversations about the Bible. YouVersion is a community built around the idea that online collaboration and interactive sharing can actually change the way we interact with the texts and one another in important ways. YouVersion is the epitome of “Open Source” theology and Biblical study. If there was ever a sign of the global decentralization of Biblical interpretation, this is it. Said differently, the work of Biblical interpretation has been freed from the ivory – and stale – towers of academia. The reformers would be amazed! This ‘aint the 16th century no more!
This is not your run-of-the-mill pew Bible. It’s not just another online Bible either. This is a fully interactive Bible that features 16 translations and community collaboration! The community collaboration is the most important feature of this virtual Bible. Users can add notes, commentary, stories and help decide if what others have added is relevant to the text to which it was added. Basically, this is an open source commentary that evolves, grows, and corrects itself in community. It is truly remarkable. Read more…

The Church and Social Networking Tools

The incredible rise of social networking tools on the Internet is a phenomenon that should not be ignored by the Church. Web 2.0 applications and dedicated Social Networking sites offer the church very real and very practical opportunities to share important information, make lasting contacts, establish virtual relationships, and coordinate missional activity on scales that go well beyond the local environment. For the first time ever, perhaps, we can share field stories, suggestions, tips, and successes in real-time without time or geographical borders or barriers. It is truly a remarkable phenomenon. Internet Evangelism Day 2008
Are you an Internet evangelist? Do you live with an Internet evangelist? If either is the case, then by all means do check out or pass the word about Internet Evangelism Day (IED). You can access a bunch of online resources at the official IED web site that will aid you in your digital outreach and evangelism. Incidentally, Internet Evangelism Day is being celebrated on the 27th of April. Personally, I’m not sold on the idea. I think relationships in real-time are pretty important in meaningful evangelism, but with God, I know, anything is possible!
UPDATE: I received a note from Internet Evangelism Day Coordinator, Tony Whittaker. I think Tony makes some really awesome points. Check Tony’s note after the jump (reprinted with permission). Read more…
