In Memory of Dr. Janice Gable

Dr Janice GableDr. Janice Gable, professor of English and chair of the Arts and Science Department at Valley Forge Christian College, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 14th, 2008. Dr. Gable was a special teacher. In fact, she was beyond special. She was one of those teachers who actually showed up because she truly wanted to challenge and stretch the imaginations and minds of her students. Not all teachers care about such things; Dr. Gable was not one of them. She was not only instrumental in expanding my own cultural and literary horizons, but also became one of the few catalysts that lovingly nudged me towards deeper spiritual formation in an authentic and serious way.

Dr. Gable introduced this serious English underachiever to the likes of Gish Jen, Molière, Sophocles, Mary Shelley, Christopher Marlowe, Herman Melville, Stephen Crane, Joseph Conrad, Franz Kafka, Euripides, and way too many others to recall off the top of my head. I traveled through English, American, and World Literature with Dr. Gable. Then there was the Creative Writing course a handful of us spent with her. What a riotous joy! Those classes are still cherished highlights of my undergraduate studies in theology. Dr. Gable was a gift from God. She was a special professor. Read more…

A Barna Report on Technology in the Church

Barna has a new report on the use of technology in the church. Interesting numbers, to say the least. Barna also says the following:

The incorporation of digital technologies into church-based ministry is an important frontier for churches to master, according to George Barna, who directed these studies for The Barna Group over the course of the decade.

My only question, and I can’t help but to ask, how does all of this – especially the above quote – jive with all that Barna proclaimed in his controversial book “Pagan Christianity?” Seriously? Is technology and the mastery of technology rooted in the New Testament way of doing church? I do think the church should get a grip on technology and use it for the Kingdom of God, but Barna sure shouldn’t be thinking so, after what was written in “Pagan Christianity,” should he? Barna has seriously lost me somewhere along the line. I guess I’m asking what is the purpose and/or goal of his research and research reporting, post “Pagan Christianity.”

A Rainy Day Saturday is Therapy

I’m spending this rainy Saturday on sermon preparation, wrestling with the laptop/LCD projector combo, and listening to Santo Domingo De Silos Coro De Los Monjes Benedictinos: Requiem Aeternam. Between all of that wonderful activity, I’m entertaining my children and being entertained by them. There is not much to report, but there is a lot going on! Carry on, good readers.

Live From 29 Palms: A Quick but Broad Update

Things are still a bit slow here at Tribe. I’ve been busy with church planting responsibilities, reading, design work, and family life in general. It’s all good, but very time consuming. Writing seems to be the first thing to be nixed from schedule when things get busy. It’s unfortunate, but unavoidable. Regular posting should resume soon.

I’m still slightly busy this morning so a quick but very broad update will have to do for the time being:

CHURCH PLANTING STUFF

God is full of surprises. We had a crowd of new visitors this past Sunday. It was awesome. They are the kind of people we need to get this movement started. They are the kind of people we have been praying for … Thanks for visiting with us! Blessings on you all!

The church plant is moving along wonderfully. It’s hard work, and it requires much, much prayer. Church planting is not for the faint of heart. Read more…

Engaging Conversations with My Children

Conversations with my children are as entertaining as they are challenging, especially as concerns Christian topics. This morning, my son engaged me with the following conversation as he worked on his 5th or 6th revision of his Christmas wish list. Read more…

Parable: Protestant Council of the City of New York

Request: I would deeply appreciate it if anyone out there can point me in the direction of an online or offline merchandiser from whom I can purchase a 1960-ish art film by the Protestant Council of the City of New York titled “Parable.” Parable is 22-minute film originally shown at the World’s Fair, sometime in the early ’60’s. I actually watched it last evening during a Christology class. I was completely awe-struck by the time the film concluded. I would really like to buy a copy for my library, if possible. So, if anyone knows, do drop me a note.

How Much Should A Christian Tip Waiters?

I have heard it said that waiters and waitresses detest Sunday afternoon shifts because Christians leave lousy tips. This should not be! Christians, of all people, should leave the most ridiculously generous tips! So, how much should you tip your waiter or waitresses? Read more…
