Hold this Thread as I Walk Away Part One

An Undone Sweater
My affiliation with the Atlantic Conference of the Brethren in Christ Church is over. Inner Metro Green – the community I launched and currently pastor – will be deciding on their own whether or not to continue their affiliation with the Atlantic Conference. The bishop and I agree that my relationship with the Atlantic Conference of the Brethren in Christ can’t continue because of the drastic difference in theology, philosophy and vision that exists between us. In other words, bigger and more serious issues await us both in the future if we continue forward with our affiliation. So, it is over and I am moving on. That said, I didn’t have much choice in the matter. I was basically presented with two options: 1. Resign; 2. Be Fired (actually, I’d choose to fire myself as a result of a clever set of options presented to me).
I think the full story should be shared with all those involved and any others who are interested. This story has been divided into two parts. The first part of the story follows. The second part of the story can be read here. Read more…

Inner Metro Green Member Declaration

Inner Metro Green Low Light Card Series
Our community (Inner Metro Green) leaders revised and ratified a new member declaration this past week. It was quite a process, to say the least. Personally, I’m proud of this group of leaders. I’m proud of how they all respected the diversity represented in our team and I’m proud of how they worked together to build a document that included everyone’s diverse expressions and convictions. Honestly, I can’t believe we managed to create this document with zero breakdowns. We had a minor hiccup or two, but no major meltdowns. Best of all, we are all still here and we still love one another! Again, this is all good reason to be proud.
I say all of the above because what we managed to accomplish was no easy feat. In fact, during seminary, my class was required to participate in a workshop of sorts that students traditionally referred to as the “WAR” class. The class was facilitated by a psychologist, a counselor, and a theology professor. Their job was to create conflict; our job was to learn something from it. So, our seminary class was divided in half and each half was given the same assignment to complete while the psychologist, counselor, and theology professor carefully observed. What was our assignment? We were asked to create a statement of belief for our group. Obviously, if you want to create conflict, a statement of belief is a surefire way to do so! Read more…

IMG Baby Dedications
We had the privilege and the honor of dedicating two babies at Inner Metro Green two weeks ago. It was a beautiful service and a very, very special time in our community. Keith and Lauren dedicated baby Jacob and Troy and Jennifer dedicated baby Lily! Here’s to promises made by the parents and promises made by the community! Here’s to the lives that Jacob and Lily will live in the future, for themselves and for God! Read more…

A Sunday Service at IMG
We had a really wonderful Sunday gathering at Inner Metro Green yesterday. 65+ people gathered for music, sharing, and learning. We have a very difficult time getting everyone who is involved with our community to show up on the same Sunday. I think our late meeting time may have something to do with it. We don’t actually start our Sunday service until 11:15AM. That’s the one negative of sharing a church space with another congregation, I suppose. If everyone would show up at the same time, for the same service, on a Sunday morning, that would be awesome! And if there was one Sunday when I really hoped this would happen, next Sunday would be it! Why? Because the IMG board is going to be distributing a multi-page community survey to everyone who is a part of our community. This community survey is important! Megan Flinchbaugh personally invested a lot of time into this very thorough survey. The goal? We want to hear from all of you! In fact, we need to hear from all of you! What would you like to see in the community? What – if anything – would you like to do? How are we doing with what we are doing right now? Questions like this – and many more – will be asked next Sunday. Megan will be distributing the surveys at the end of our regular service. It’ll take about 10-15 minutes to complete, so we will be sure to tighten up the time we use for our regular service to make time for the survey completion at the end of the service. If there was one Sunday when we needed all of you to show up at the same time, this Sunday is it!
So, come out Sunday morning and join us in community and help us shape the future of IMG!
This past Sunday’s service is available below, for your consumption. We finally figured out how to record directly from our sound board, thanks to Dean Martin, our tech/media fellow. So, the quality of the recordings from this point forward will be much better than those of the past. I still, however, need to learn how to hold the microphone when I’m speaking. Some parts of my sermon are really quiet because I tend to talk with my hands and move the microphone away from me without realizing it. Mea Culpa. I will learn to keep the mike still! At any rate, I decided to publish most of our service, instead of just a song and my sermon, since we can now record the entire thing. I did edit out the Eucharist part of our service, because we do a lot of joys and concerns sharing during that time. I also edited out offering, because well, you can’t hear anything during that time. Other than that, this is basically what our service is like.
I especially love the closing Lennon by Flinch. Awesome song.
Big thanks to Chris Flinchbaugh and Brandon Seawell for the morning’s music. Keith Slesser is the guy opening with prayer, announcements and a reading (he’s usually leading/participating in music, but he and his wife just had a baby this week – full story @ Keith’s blog). Thanks to Dean Martin for all his tech/media work for the morning. Your presence makes a huge difference, Dean! Oh yeah, I’m the morning’s speaker who keeps moving the microphone.
NOTE: An edited version of the sermon will be made available at the IMG website soon. This is my own hack job, thank you. Dean will have a much better one up soon. Anyway, push play below.

Jonathan Sigmon: What If?
Jonathan “Sigs” Sigmon just published incredible and encouraging reflections regarding Inner Metro Green. Sigs has been a part of our growing community from early on (we were still meeting in a church basement when he joined us). His contributions to the community are invaluable, to say the least.
I have to admit, when I look back at all that Sigs is reflecting upon, I am not only encouraged, but also amazed.
Here’s to what our community has been, is, and will become! With God’s help and guidance, we will have more stories than we will know what to do with… That’s a good thing!
Thanks, Sigs.

IMG Baptisms, Picnic and Football

Our community held our very first baptisms and community picnic today. It was an incredible time.
We began our morning with our Sunday worship service. That went extremely well. Then all who could attend the afternoon activities caravanned from the church to County Park. Leading that many cars that were being piloted by people who didn’t know where our chosen spot in County Park was exactly (we needed a spot where we could do full immersion baptisms), was no easy feat, with city traffic lights and whatnot. Ben Martin led us all there in excellent fashion. Thank you, Ben! I know that wasn’t easy! Read more…
