Hold this Thread as I Walk Away Part One

An Undone Sweater

An Undone Sweater

My affiliation with the Atlantic Conference of the Brethren in Christ Church is over. Inner Metro Green – the community I launched and currently pastor – will be deciding on their own whether or not to continue their affiliation with the Atlantic Conference. The bishop and I agree that my relationship with the Atlantic Conference of the Brethren in Christ can’t continue because of the drastic difference in theology, philosophy and vision that exists between us. In other words, bigger and more serious issues await us both in the future if we continue forward with our affiliation. So, it is over and I am moving on. That said, I didn’t have much choice in the matter. I was basically presented with two options: 1. Resign; 2. Be Fired (actually, I’d choose to fire myself as a result of a clever set of options presented to me).

I think the full story should be shared with all those involved and any others who are interested. This story has been divided into two parts. The first part of the story follows. The second part of the story can be read here. Read more…

BIC Listening Forward: Changing the Name?

The emerging vision for the Brethren in Christ 2010-2020 is both brave and bold. Times are changing and so should one’s church. The executive branch of the BIC understands this well, if the vision cast is any indication. The overarching BIC vision for 2010-2020 – which was provided in a nine-point, rough draft, vision-laden outline called “Listening Forward: Emerging Vision Themes 2010-2020″ during the recent new pastors orientation meet-up at Grantham, PA – will undoubtedly focus forward and cause a bit of controversy. Aspects of the vision will require a lot of flexibility by those who have overtly embraced the tradition fostered by their own immediate experience and time. Read more…

BIC Listening Forward: Emerging Vision Themes

Monday and Tuesday were spent in Grantham, PA at the Brethren in Christ New Pastor’s Orientation Seminar. It was a wonderful time filled with brand new – and renewed – denominational connections, distinctive historical and theological lessons, and bold visions for the denomination’s future. My wife and I are already pretty familiar with the history and theology of the church, so our personal highlight reel is mostly composed of items belonging to the ‘new connection’ and ‘future vision’ categories. Emerging and Classic Brethren in Christ Ecclesiology

I am a devoted member of the Brethren in Christ Church. Many of you know that I was converted and baptized under the grace-laden spiritual guidance of an old, pious, and wise BIC pastor. I am now a pastor and church planter within the Brethren in Christ. The BIC is my spiritual home. I’m also conversant with the Emerging Church. The fusion of the emerging conversation and classic BIC expression works well because it’s a combination that offers plenty of opportunities for practical and relevant congruence. The Emerging Conversation resonates with very, very important aspects of classic BIC theology, expression, and praxis. Some say the Emerging Church reflects the principles and theology inherent to Anabaptist expressions of Christianity, of which the BIC is a part. I tend to agree. Read more…

10 Tough Questions Sermon Series at Manor Church

Today marked the start of a 10 week “Ten Tough Questions” Sunday series at Manor Brethren in Christ Church. Manor BIC is our home church. It is also the commissioning and sponsoring congregation for Inner Metro Green. So, when I was asked if I would preach one of the Sundays in this incredible series, I said yes, and emphatically so!
