Isaiah 2: 1-5 The Message Isaiah got regarding Judah and Jerusalem: There’s a day coming when the mountain of God’s House will be The Mountain – solid, towering over all mountains. All nations will river toward it, people from all over set out for it. They’ll say, “Come, let’s climb God’s Mountain, go to the House of the God of Jacob. He’ll show us the way he works so we can live the way we’re made.” Zion’s the source of the revelation. God’s Message comes from Jerusalem. He’ll settle things fairly between nations. He’ll make things right between many peoples. They’ll turn their swords into shovels, their spears into hoes. No more will nation fight nation; they won’t play war anymore. Come, family of Jacob, let’s live in the light of God.

Living in the light of God sounds like a beautiful thing to do. The redeeming of doomsday weapons and ecological devastation within that light sound like beautiful things too. When we live in the light of God, it seems, according to Isaiah, that all the stupid fighting stops and people instead invest all of that energy into peace, horticulture and other positive endeavors. Science has so much potential for good, if only our God-given ingenuity was bent positive rather than the negative. Destruction of all that that is good and beautiful is such an easy task. We can tear down things so much faster than we can build them. Obliterating things is easy because it is reckless. It doesn’t take a sharp mind to demolish. Building something that is good, beautiful and universally encouraging is much, much harder work. It takes time, care, and mathematical planning. Destruction is mindless. Yet, we have a seemingly unquenchable penchant for it. Why is this so? Why do we prefer destroying more than building? Do we really prefer to be a sledge hammer wielding and un-thinking mob of perpetually separated individuals who are content with speeding around in reverse? Are we really that reckless? It seems so, yes. But …

There is still great hope! Consider Seed Bombs, for example. Seed Bombs are a symbol of this hope! Can a bomb be redeemed? Yes! This bomb, after all, is a bomb that plants rather than uproots. Can you imagine? A bomb … that plants trees. Maybe humanity does have a real shot at authentically living in Isaiah’s light of God? Maybe. Let’s hope and pray that this sort of bombing becomes the only bombing humanity pursues in the future. With God’s help, it could be so.

Mission Seedbomb involves a bomber aircraft and charges full of the Seed Capsules. Essentially the project involves artificial dispersal of seeds over arid areas where natural vegetation has lapsed due to man-made follies like deforestation leading to desertification. Each capsule contains artificial soil and seeds, and are air-dropped over the selected regions. Housed in biodegradable plastic, the artificial soil provides nourishment and moisture to the seed; till it grows out to be a strong enough plant to sustain itself. As the sapling matures, the plastic capsule melts away, leaving behind a brand new generation.

Seedbombs disassemble in mid-air, when they are dropped. Their content – seed – is dispersed over a large area that needs re-growing. The bomb casing naturally biodegrades over time leaving only a new plant growing in its place. So, land areas that have been marred by our foolish deforestation and areas that have even succumbed to desertification could potentially be made green once more. This is an incredible idea! These are bombs many of us could support.

Let’s redeem it!

Man, the Google ad appearing on this page is unfortunate … I’ll see if I can nix that one.

Wow, that is amazing. As long as those plants are genetically modified, I’m all for it. The world needs more of this kind of thinking!

  3. Shawn says:

Dean – hey. bro. Did you mean to write “as long as those plants ARE genetically modified? I’m guessing you mean the opposite?

On a side note, I’m glad you were at the meeting last night. Moving forward …
