The earthquake in Haiti is a terrible tragedy. It is a reminder of how fragile existence on this planet can be really. It is tragedy. Tragedy requires compassion, assistance, sacrifice, and much love. I think the most non-religious person on this planet understands this truth well enough. I wonder why the loudest, most visible, most powerful religious voices can not, or at least it seems as if they can not. I am, of course, talking about Pat Robertson and his latest spew of ignorance regarding the tragedy in Haiti as being a direct result of some sort of Haitian pact with the devil. Mr. Robertson, instead of using his incredible influence, long reach, and wide platform to dispense compassion and love, only offered judgment and guilt based upon his own silly superstitions. Yes, it was a sham and a shame. But, Pat Robertson’s latest stupid rant is not the point of this post. His voice and they way he uses it is …

My point in this post has more to do with the way things are in the spiritual circles in this country and the globe over. It seems to me that the most vile, backwater, ill-informed social preachers are more often than not the bravest, loudest, and most visible. They are the power houses and they wield their brand of authority and loud voice as they please. The more sensible, compassionate, and informed spiritual activists seem to me to be the quietest. Why is this so? Is this humility? Is it wisdom? Is it meekness? I’m not so sure.

I’m waiting for the day when those more sensible, compassionate, and informed spiritual activists grow weary of celebrating humility at the expense of social and spiritual unction and like the prophets of old stand up and tell more than a few people: “Shut up and sit down! Enough is enough! We have carried on like this, wrestling with the same old dated and tired and silly issues, for far too long. I would rather starve then eat at your table. So, kindly step aside.”

Will the meek inherit the earth? Perhaps if they scream loud enough. We should start that soon.
