Greg Carey – NT professor at Lancaster Theological Seminary – asks a profound question on his blog:
I wonder about both those possibilities (1. The power of early Christian religious experience; 2.) The relationships early Jesus people fostered with one another.). But I really, really wonder what it would have been like for an early Jesus person to tell their neighbor that they followed a crucified messiah.
I have to say, again, that if you are not reading Greg Carey’s blog you are missing out. Greg is an incredibly honest and thought provoking New Testament scholar as well as an authority on Apocalyptic Literature. He’s also a really great person. I spent three weeks with Greg on trip to Turkey and Lebanon in 2006. Every student enrolled in the M.Div track at Lancaster Theological Seminary must fulfill the International Cross Cultural Seminar requirement. The International Cross Cultural Seminar is, according to LTS, “a three-week encounter in a Latin American, Middle Eastern, African, Asian, or Eastern European setting, intended to generate an appreciation of social, political, economic, and ecclesial otherness within M.Div. students.” Greg was one of the faculty leaders for our class trip to the Middle East. He’s a great person and an incredible scholar. He has much to share with all of us.
So, head on over to NTGeeks and introduce yourselves and take a shot at an answer for the above question! And check out Lancaster Theological Seminary too! I’ll say this about LTS: I miss LTS more and more as my experiences of the community recede deeper into the past. It is a wonderful community that continues to grow on you long after graduation. Yes! It’s that good!
